I'm a Teenager - How Do I Stop My Dad From Physically Abusing Me?

On my Physical Effects of Child Abuse article, a 13 year old teenager asked what to do about his dad, who is abusing him physically. If you're in the same situation -- or a friend is -- here are a few suggestions...

When you're being abused by your parents:

  • Tell another adult (teacher, guidance counselor, neighbor, pastor, coach, family members, any responsible adult) -- and keep telling until you get help.
  • Visit ChildHelp.org
  • Call the Childhelp National Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD
  • Call your local distress line or help line for kids
  • Call Social Services or Child Protective Services

For emotional help when you're a teenager who is being abused, read Help for Surviving Abuse and Abusive Relationships.

And even though the abuse may be happening right now, you might find Ways to Cope With Past Child Abuse helpful.

If you think you're dealing with depression because of the abuse, read Solutions for Depressed or Anxious Teens.

I'm very sorry you're being physically or emotionally abused or neglected. It's very sad and painful -- and the best thing you can do is to find an adult who can support and help you.
