The NYSE has joined the NASDAQ in closing January 2nd to honor President Gerald R. Ford's passing. This will be a very rare time when the NYSE is closed for four straight days.
All markets were already scheduled to be close for New Year's Day, a typical holiday for all the markets.
See the NYSE holiday page and its News Page
The last time the markets closed for a presidential funeral was for the burial of President Ronald Reagan in June 2004.
The first Wall Street closing for a presidential funeral was for the burial of President Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. Sometimes the NYSE elected to honor the president's death and burial with a shortened trading day. This last occured for President Herbert Hoover's funeral in 1964.
The NYSE, Nasdaq and New York Mercantile Exchange observed two minutes of silence on Wednesday December 28th before opening for business. Traders on the NASDAQ, an electronic exchange, were asked to not make any transactions for the two minutes to honor President Ford.
