Chris Brown Band's "Live" EP is guitar-driven rock worship, thoughtfully arranged and played with great fervor. The 5-piece band rides these songs with tight control, building the thundering guitars of "Silver Lining" to a melodic crescendo and keeping the ripping chords of "What I Can't See" always in subjugation to Brown's earnest vocals. The percolating rhythms and loping bass line of opener "Outshine" lead directly into exultant worship. Chris Brown and his band know where they're going and how to get there.
The joyous "Absorb" stands out for both its descriptive lyrics and careful arrangements. But it is the unnamed bonus track that really stops you in your tracks. The sparkling acoustic guitar of this quiet ballad leads you deep into a place of contemplation, while Brown's gentle vocals encourage your spirit. The effect is as restful as a massage, yet stimulating to the soul. I predict the Chris Brown Band will go beyond youth camp ministry very soon. You can order the "Live" EP at the band's website.
