What's on your iPod?

My first pick (hands down) would be Dave Matthews Band's Satellite. It's perfect listening for watching an Iridium flare or any other satellite cross the sky, including the International Space Station or even the moon.

Satellite in my eyes/Like a diamond in the sky/How I wonder./Satellite strung from the moon/And the world your balloon/Peeping Tom for the mother station

My second pick is a great little romantic song for a summer night, lying back in a deck chair and watching the river of our galaxy pour overhead. It's Church's Under the Milky Way.

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,/

Sound of their breath fades with the light./

I think about the loveless fascination,/

Under the Milky Way tonight.

Lower the curtain down in Memphis,/

Lower the curtain down all right./

I got no time for private consultation,/

Under the Milky Way tonight.

For all you country music listeners, there's Joe Diffie's Third Rock from the Sun, or for hip hop fans, the Beastie Boys' Intergalactic (Planetary). Oldies fan? How about Blue Moon by Elvis. Hoping for a cloudless night so you can see that planetary conjuction? Try Blue Skies by Frank Sinatra. The film Apollo 13 has an entire soundtrack that you can listen to while you relive moments from the movie.

Certainly one of the most haunting songs of this genre is Space Oddity by David Bowie. One of his best-known songs, it may have been inspired by the Apollo 8 astronauts who were the first humans to leave Earth's orbit and orbit around the moon. The song describes an astronaut, named Major Tom, who is rocketing off into space and at the end is lost. It is also quite likely that the song is drug-related. Nevertheless, a pretty good tune!

Ground control to Major Tom/

Ground control to Major Tom/

Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground control to Major Tom/

Commencing countdown, engines on/

Check ignition and may God's love be with you

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,

Four, three, two, one, liftoff

This is ground control to Major Tom/

You've really made the grade/

And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear/

Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is Major Tom to ground control/

I'm stepping through the door/

And I'm floating in a most peculiar way/

And the stars look very different today

For here/

Am I sitting in a tin can/

Far above the world/

Planet Earth is blue/

And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles/

I'm feeling very still/

And I think my spaceship knows which way to go/

Tell me wife I love her very much she knows

Ground control to Major Tom/

Your circuits dead, there's something wrong/

Can you hear me, Major Tom? /

Can you hear me, Major Tom? /

Can you hear me, Major Tom? /

Can you....

Here am I floating round my tin can/

Far above the moon/

Planet Earth is blue/

And there's nothing I can do.
