I love to talk to people about what is happening in the sky, and I enjoy writing the Night Sky articles each month. Some of the people who read my articles, and some of the people I know in everyday life, are interested in astrology. No, I'm not about to go get a chart done or read my horoscope in the paper, but there's no reason that I can't connect with these people where we do share common interests.
My last blog I wrote about the elitism that exists in astronomy. A good portion of this is directed, with much wrath, at people who believe in astrology. I have discussed in previous blogs how astrology is scientifically incorrect, so I won't go into it here. And I've certainly been guilty of poking fun at astrologers. Because ... well ... it's funny.
But there are connections we can make with people who are open to seeing the universe from a scientific standpoint. They may be just as interested as you in the next eclipse or planetary conjunction. We don't need to throw the astrologist out with the (invisible) bathwater. We can discuss the viewing conditions for the conjunction that night or if either one will be photographing the event to share with others. And the rest of it we can agree to disagree on.
Wars of the mind are not won through force but through friendly give-and-take. And sometimes subversive trickery.
