On the coast we park our Land Cruiser and walk on a remote beach, shared only with a few fishing people. After about two kilometres we see the first sea elephants lying in the sand, warming themselves in the sun. In most places you can only see these animals from high up on a cliff and now suddenly we find ourselves walking among them, which makes it quite special. We keep our distance and are constantly alert for warning signs from the females who guard their young. When they feel threatened they start to breathe loudly and their nostrils grow large. When that's not enough they lift their heads up, open their mouths and produce a deep sound which is something between a sigh and a growl. Some of the sea elephants are snoring deeply and the obese males seem to be the least disturbed of all.
We camp nearby and at eight in the morning we're the only three to enter the Natural Park of Punta Tombo. This is one of the largest of the Magellan Penguin colonies in the world with about half a million penguins returning here every year to breed and hatch their eggs. We're early, even the penguins haven't waken up yet. While following the paths we pass right beside their nests, dug in the sand or hidden under bushes; most of them have two eggs. It's quite amazing that the presence of thousands of tourists [who start arriving in big coaches from ten o'clock onward] apparently doesn't disturb this process. The first two hours are ours, in complete silence and peace. It's awesome.
Wildlife and bushcamping are the major attractions to Patagonia and the Lake District. Bring warm clothes and be prepared for lots of wind. Below you will find links to articles which I wrote after having visited these marvellous places. They give a glimpse of nature's majesty that's awaiting you in Argentina. Enjoy!
