We see the first signs of our approaching the Pantanal, the world's largest wetlands: toucans fly in front of the car – imposing black birds with orange, red, yellow banana beaks. We spot several "arara" couples: macaws, beautifully coloured with blue-red, blue-yellow or bluebell-tinted feathers. The latter is the king of the macaws, being the largest of all three, but extinction threatens him due to illegal trade in tropical animals.
This introduction led to a more than three week exploration of the interior of the Pantanal. Travelling with our own Land Cruiser allowed us to have an independent journey of discovery as well as the option of bush camping. One of our highlights was the encounter with Pablo and subsequently our stay at his Fazenda 4 Cantos, where we met the fazenda's pets: two toucans and a two-year old giant anteater, Philip.
This journey led me to writing a series of articles related to the Pantanal, of which I hope it gives you all the information needed to make your own unforgettable journey to one of the most beautiful places on earth – whether this is done independently or with an Pantanal tour. Happy travelling!
