Resources for Travel in Chile – the Central Region of the Elquí Valley and the Lake District

When we arrived in La Serena to spend the Christmas Holidays we discovered that Chile's largest religious festival was held nearby, in the town of Andacollo. When we reached the square we were brought up short in amazement by the spectacle in front of us. This religious gathering draws crowds of up to 150,000 worshippers and among them were two hundred dance groups from the entire country, all showing an amazing display of colour and festivity.

La Fiesta Grande is one of those festivals where the religious aspect is combined with the colourful magic of more traditional music and dances. Modern groups had costumes that were bright and shiny, but which were far less imposing than the traditional Indian costumes, with their most elaborate plume headdresses. The plaza was filled with a frenzied crowd, half of them participating in one of these dance groups, the other half – we among them – watching, mesmerized.

The Elquí Valley held more surprises. Below you will find links to informative articles about excursions to a Pisco Distillery – Pisco is Chile's national drink – and an observatory. For lovers of fish, put La Serena on your itinerary. Last but not least, there is Chile's magic Lake District to explore. Enjoy!
