In all traditional places we have visited the last six years, it was always the women who upheld traditions and who were beautiful to watch in their elaborate, traditional dresses. But in Argentina the traditional culture of gauchos is a male thing. Not so strange of course, if you know that gauchos were always men, just as today. They used to ride across the pampas – the plains of Argentina – to take care of the roaming cows. Here, in the province of Córdoba, in the "campo" – countryside – we still see farmers dressed in gaucho dress, but there is a clear distinction between their daily working outfits and the elaborate attires at a festival like Argentina's largest festival of the year: "The Doma y Folklore Festival".
At last we unashamedly stare at men! Oh, how proud they are – and rightfully so! Their outfit consists of a 'bombacha" [loose trousers], partly covered by shiny, knee-high leather boots. Over a long-sleeved blouse a scarf is worn, and gauchos wear either a sombrero or a beret. The outfit is completed by an elaborate belt or a cummerbund that holds their knife – often beautifully decorated or carved.
The latter says a lot about the happy and relaxed ambiance of this large gathering. Since the knives are such an elementary part of the gaucho outfit, they are allowed inside the amphitheatre. While the Doma and Folklore Festival goes on all night and alcohol flows in abundance, in the forty years of its existence there has never been one single incident with knives.
