Off-roading in Argentina
West of Purmamarca the road climbs with endless hairpins up to 4,000 metres. This is La Puna, the altiplano that stretches all the way into Bolivia and Chile. Long, flat expanses of land alternate with winding roads through hilly regions. Of all of Argentina we have come to love this area the most. It's so remote, so barren, and so majestic. We drive just for the sake of driving; even the ruthless washboards can't take away a feeling of awe. Mother Nature saved her best work for this area. Surroundings change in colour: red and orange mountains, blue sparkling streams creating a bit of green moss or grass, white stretches of salt lining the streams. Endless plains with grazing vicuñas complete the scene.
Outdoor Activities in Argentina
Argentina is a country so rich in nature that it's bound to attract travellers who love outdoor adventure. The Lonely Planets trekking guide "Trekking in the Patagonian Andes" offers several itineraries in the Andes Mountains. But there is more, I enjoyed my first tandem-paragliding flight in La Cumbre – near Córdoba – and loved it. We watched windsurfers and kitesurfers battle with incredible winds and discovered the joy of horseback riding at Estancia Helsingfors and El Puesto, near Córdoba.
In Argentina there is something for everybody. The list of articles below is just a tiny selection of all that Argentina has to offer in terms of outdoor activities – at least this overview will give you an impression of what adventures you can explore in this fascinating country. Enjoy!
