"Get more sleep" is the first suggestion in my article "New Year's Resolutions: Realistic Changes for Stay-at-Home Parents," and I'm planning to take my own advice. But I know that even "realistic" ideas for change are easier said than done. Committing to change involves internal motivation and conviction. I've tried to take this into account in my article. I think this distinguishes my suggestions from a resolution such as weight loss, which is probably more externally than internally motivated.

What if we resolved instead to love our bodies? We'd nourish and exercise our bodies to care for them, but we wouldn't hate ourselves for the way we look. I'm not there yet, but I've had long periods of body satisfaction and can tell you that my media consumption plays a role in my self-image. For tips on having a body-positive media experience, read A Mom's Self-Image, then post your comments on the discussion forum.

I recently discovered that my three-year-old son, who remembers the gifts he received last Christmas and knows the locations of the coolest light displays in our neighborhood, had no idea whose birthday we celebrate at Christmastime. He's heard about the real meaning of Christmas, but the tangible traditions of the holiday make more sense to him than the abstract significance of Jesus' birth. So I started wondering how I could make the reason for the season more concrete. After talking with friends, I came up with several suggestions described in "The Real Meaning of Christmas." Read the article, and then post your comments on the discussion forum.

If you haven't arrived home to find the floors vacuumed or a meal that you didn't prepare heating on the stove, maybe you can add these requests to your Christmas list. Check out my "Gifts for Stay-at-Home Parents" article for ideas, then post your own suggestions to the discussion forum.
