My cosmopolitan town of Brookline, MA, is home to a large Jewish community. There are many synagogues, of all stripes, and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings there is a fashionable parade of cheerful, dressed-up people.
Last weekend there was increased activity, and Temples, I heard, were packed with people, and indeed I saw them streaming out. For many Temples you even had to make reservations weeks in advance.
That is because the most important religious time for the Jewish people, called the Ten Days of Awe, has begun, starting with Rosh HaShanah or the Jewish New Year, and to end soon with Yom Kippur.
