Some traditions are so "small," so interwoven with our daily lives that we take it for granted that everyone shares them. Then we are stunned when we realize that others have never heard of such a thing, and even find strange! In the first series of articles in this section I write about such culture shocks as they are occasioned by food. Food is so central to our lives, and so dependent on where and when we live, that it is bound to give rise to a surprise now and then. I write from my own experience, but feel free to write me with your own examples.
We begin with a real shocker to most of you: in Belgium we consume raw meat almost daily!
