Tart, Bright and a Well-Perched Slice of Life in the Media: Welcome to Limelight

Welcome to the inaugural post of Suite’s not-to-be-missed Limelight blog; check here and check often for all things new media, from the latest in publishing industry insider news across formats, to the way in which tech gizmo (glossary translation ;) ) launches are changing the face of social interaction on the Web and off.

Our resident experts are standing by to shine the spotlight on the eclectic, amusing, and underrated articles on our site as well as posts on our sister presses, not to mention dishing the straight goods about entering and excelling in today’s mercurial world of freelance writing.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro, a relative neophyte, or a casual interloper, print and online publishing registers the zeitgeist faster than anecdotal observation ever could and it’s always rife with predictions, controversial creative rights issues, and no small portion of gossip. At the risk of sounding presumptuous, we are going to take the liberty of placing these issues firmly "in the limelight" and taking a stand. If you beg to differ; all the better.
If you’re looking for candid advice to jumpstart your online writing or editing career, best practices for search engine optimization and other meta-trickery, under-the-radar news stories that give you an edge and help you pick a fight at the water cooler, or just a quick cheat sheet for buzz topics sure to surface at Saturday night’s cocktail party, look no further.
Citizen journalism, e-book platforms, Web 2.0 trends, highs and lows in magazine, newspaper and books from NY to London to our own beloved Vancouver, blogosphere meltdowns, who’s who tell-alls both scandalous and ridiculous – we’ll take it on, fence-sitting prohibited.
Want to know who “we” are? Marci Hotsenpiller, PR guru to the stars (Suite stars that is), Holly Pateman, marketing aficionado and local recruitment wiz, our Associate Editor, friend of upstarts and foe of literary imposters, and myself, Joy Gugeler, Jane of all trades fiction, fact, digital, and bound and bibliophile without apology.
From time to time, we will be joined in cyberspace by other Suite mucky mucks, section editors weighing in on life in one of our 20 departments, 400 topics and 3000 categories, and celebrity authors who are just dropping in in search of the paparazzi. Needless to say if you’re not reading the Limelight, you’re decreasing your chances of being in it and everyone secretly loves the spotlight, humble pretenses to the contrary.
So, see you here or on the trade show floor, in the hallowed halls of journalism schools, the book festival green room, or our very own lime-coloured universe. Stay tuned for our live coverage of Book Expo America in Los Angeles May 28-June 1 and expect the unexpected.
