Good Christian Childrens' Music

Does the thought of listening to “Wiggly, Wiggly World” for the tenth time in a row make you want to throw the CD player? I think the main problem with kids’ music is that those that make it seem to think that kids won’t like it unless it’s annoying to their parents.

Most of the CDs my daughter has are rehashes of children’s songs. Those old standards like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” can be heard in my happy home. She has CDs with the traditional Christian children’s songs like “Father Abraham” and “Jesus Loves Me.” One of the new trends I have seen, but haven’t jumped on the band wagon yet, is adult Praise and Worship songs sung by kids. I’ve heard “I Can Only Imagine” a billion times on the radio and I don’t need to hear it sung by eight-year-olds.

Thankfully a duo of singer/songwriters has come to our rescue. Andrew Peterson and Randall Goodgame are topnotch musicians and have been enjoyed by the adult population worldwide for years. Now that they are both dads, they decided to cater to the wee folk while keeping us adults in mind. It’s called “Slugs, Bugs, and Lullabies.”

On his MySpace site, Mr. Peterson says, “I've got three kids, Randall's got two, and we finally got around to recording our lullabies and goofy kids' songs--18, to be exact.” That’s right, eighteen songs. It really is a great album.

All of the kids that I know that have heard it, love it and the parents enjoy it. I love watching the kids act out all of the songs. I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom from Mr. Goodgame about the CD, “Parents won't want to stick a fork in their eye when they've heard it for the 10th time in a row.”

Hi Shane,

I was wondering if you'd allow a link to a song I've written that would be great for children. It's called "Better Get In The Boat",
about Noah and the flood. It's fun, has a great message, and adults
love it too! I think it fits the "good music" you talk about... parents can listen over and over and won't be annoyed! Thanks! Mike
