In many ways the internet has helped out the indie artist. Technology has almost leveled the playing field. Almost.
One great thing that artists can do is give people a sampling of their music. Indie musicians don’t get much radio play so they need to get their music in front of people. The internet presents many options to let people hear them before plunking down their hard earned cash.
Even with all of the controversy about MySpace.com, it is still an effective tool used by many musicians, even Christian artists. They can put up a few songs and even let people download them. This is an easy and cheap way to let people know how you sound.
Christians are known to be giving and that can extend to Christian musicians. Derek Webb did a promotion where he gave away copies of his CD, Mocking Bird. He had a website setup so people could download the whole CD for free for a limited time. Webb allowed people to download it as many times as they wanted. I am curious to see whether or not he will do this with his new CD, The Ringing Bell.
Andrew Peterson and Andrew Osenga are also letting you listen to full albums for free. On their website they have players so you can hear a whole CD. Peterson has his latest studio CD, The Far Country, available and Osenga offers his latest, The Morning. You can listen to the full CD, not just 30 second clips.
Free music is a good thing. If you do find a musician you like, I would encourage you to support them by buying their CDs and other merchandise. That way they can keep doing the thing they love and hopefully making you happy as well.
