Buying a BMX Bike

If you've decided that you are destined for BMX racing, don't let the bike buying process become a hurdle. Nothing can be more frustrating to a beginner (in anything) than to be faced with a store full of choices and very few clues as to what you really need and what is standard. The process can be even more aggravating if you're the parent and trying to find the perfect bike for your future BMX superstar.

In this week's article I cover some BMX-specific topics that you'll find when shopping for a BMX bike. Most bikes that are manufactured now are made with all of the safety features in place. Pay particular attention to the safety measures to be sure that your bike complies.

While I can help you with a basic buying guide and familiarize you with common parts, I cannot chose a brand for you. The brand you buy will be determined by availability, price and individual taste. Some of the more common brands are GT, Mongoose and Schwinn although there are many quality start-up lines like Intense Bikes.

In the next few weeks, I'll cover freestyle and jump bikes and department store vs. bicycle shops for buying your bike.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or comments. I'll also take your recommendations on brands!
