An average adult gains approximately 5 lbs. over the holidays. While 5 lbs. isn't a lot of weight to worry about, studies show that the pounds gained during the holidays usually isn't lost. So if someone gains 5 lbs. every holiday, and it's not lost, after a couple of years, that's definitely something to be worried about! Here are a few ways you can stay in shape this holiday season.
Stay Active
When we are preoccupied with buying gifts, planning holiday meals, and just stressing out in general, it's easy to put physical activity on the backburner. We may tell ourselves, "I'll get back to my workouts when the holidays are over." Not so fast. How many times have you fallen off the workout wagon and haven't gotten back on for months? Stay active throughout the holidays by sticking to your regular workout regimen. If you're short on time, find some activity to do in short bursts such as a 15-minute walk on the treadmill, running in place or try to find a home workout on DVD that's short in length. Remember that staying active will offset at least some of the extra calories you may consume.
Watch Portion Sizes
It's awfully tempting to overeat foods that we may only eat once a year during the holidays. While it's okay to treat yourself, do so in moderation. Instead of taking a second helping of those buttery mashed potatoes that only mom can make the right way, fill your plate the first time with a small portion of a variety of foods. A good rule of thumb for not overeating is to stop eating when you're not hungry any longer (not when you're stuffed!). No worries - there will be leftovers.
Plan Ahead
Some people find it hard to resist temptation if they don't have a plan in place for dinner at the in-laws or a New Year's party at a friend's house. Before arriving at your destination, make a plan of what you will eat and drink and what you absolutely won't touch and stick to it. If you have to be around pushy people who insist that you must eat (those who do this know who you are - stop it!), take only one appetizer before eating dinner. If a certain type of food or beverage is being pushed on you that you absolutely can't "do just one," don't do it. Your friends and family will still love you even if you don't eat their food.
Distract Yourself
There's nothing better to take your mind off of all the yummy foods available during the holidays than to remember what's best about the holidays - spending time with family and friends. Instead of nonstop eating, spend time making memories with your loved ones.
Relax
Gaining weight during the holidays is not inevitable, but sometimes you may do everything "right" and still gain a couple pounds. Don't be too hard on yourself (remember that stress can lead to belly fat!) and keep in mind that those same pounds that were gained can be lost as long as you're committed to making it happen.
Happy Holidays!
