Understanding Mormonism through the 13 Articles of Faith
The Articles of Faith comprise 13 statements of belief of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were written in 1842 by Joseph Smith in response to a newspaper reporter asking what Mormons believe. Together, they form a fairly complete and accurate representation of LDS church doctrine in a nutshell.
This series of articles explaining each Article of Faith is intended to increase understanding of the Mormon religion:
- First Article of Faith - deals with Mormon belief in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost
- Second Article of Faith - talks about Adam, Eve, and original sin
- Third Article of Faith - addresses the atonement of Jesus Christ and obedience to His commandments
- Fourth Article of Faith - explains the four basic building blocks of the gospel
- Fifth Article of Faith - elucidates priesthood authority and serving in the church
- Sixth Article of Faith - talks about the restoration of the gospel and explains Mormon church organization
- Seventh Article of Faith - lists the gifts of the Spirit
- Eighth Article of Faith - describes the roles of the Bible and the Book of Mormon
- Ninth Article of Faith - affirms belief in continuing revelation from God
- Tenth Article of Faith - addresses the gathering of Israel in the last days
- Eleventh Article of Faith - stresses the importance of freedom of religion
- Twelfth Article of Faith - deals with patriotism and being law-abiding citizens
- Thirteenth Article of Faith - emphasizes that Mormons seek all the good things in life
(Obviously, more articles are forthcoming and this list will be updated as time goes on.)
The Articles of Faith form a well-known expression of religious beliefs that children in the Mormon faith are often encouraged to memorize. They form a concise, cohesive statement of what Mormons believe.
