I went to a new primary care physician the other day and was surprised to see a large, beautiful husky sitting on a cushion in her consultation room. She explained that it was her therapy dog which she brought around to her patients that she visited in the hospital. The dog impressed me with his disposition, but also by the way he put me at ease during the visit. Animals have a definite therapeutic quality because they lessen stress and generally put smiles on patients' faces.
I find that my own cat, Sandy, gives me the same pleasure and reduces my stress. I can be having a lousy day, but just playing with him for a little while takes my mind off of myself and focuses it on something positive. Pets give you a responsibility to tend to and they are generally grateful, bringing you a sense of pride and accomplishment that has nothing to do with your illness. Animals also help patients through the rough times with unconditional love. My husband and I find Sandy to be a great source of fun, love, and because he IS a cat, endless intrigue. Enjoy the therapy your pet gives you, or seek out a new friend from your local shelter.
