MS Severity and Genetic Factors

A European study by the "GAMES" (Genetic Analysis of MS in Europeans) Collaborative Group reveals some interesting and uplifting information about multiple sclerosis, heredity, and severity. Apparently there is some genetic risk for developing MS, but the severity of the disease varies by family member. If a parent has progressive MS, a child who also has MS may not have as severe a case. Age of onset seems to be similar among family members, but no definite link was noted with severity. The clinical course and severity of multiple sclerosis was most similar between siblings. This is hopeful news for MS patients who watch their parents suffer with MS: there is no definite link between the disease course of a parent and a child.
