Under Construction

I’m in Gingerbread House Hades. Our outdoor plans flummoxed by an ice storm and a probable case of pinkeye, I decided my sons and I would make an edible replica of our modest organic garden with a traditional gingerbread house. Royal icing is easy enough to make, so I bought a box of graham crackers for the structure, some coconut flakes to tint for grass, and some assorted gumdrops and hard candies to fashion edible flowers. Two hours later, I’m not sure what we’ve created… a gingerbread shanty? A gingerbread flophouse? It’s a good thing that appearance matters not to three preschool-aged children. In the future, however, I think I’ll save my creative energies for the garden.
