Windows Live SkyDrive

Windows recently released Live SkyDrive, a free online storage area where registered users are able to store and share up to 500 MB of information including important documents, photographs and songs. For users with more than one computer, this free online storage area is a great resource! Live SkyDrive, formally known as Windows Live Folders, is a beta version which allows users to create three different types of folders; personal, shared, or public.

  1. Personal folders allow access only to an individual user and are password-protected with the user's Live ID.
  2. With Shared folders, sharing information with family, friends and coworkers is simple and easy. In order to access the information in shared folders, users must first sign in using their own personal Windows Live ID and password. Various permissions, such as adding, deleting, or reading of the information is up to the owner’s discretion.
  3. Public folders allow anyone on the Internet to view files in this particular section. Viewers are able to read or view the information, but are not allowed to alter the information. Each folder and file has its very own web address. With public folders, it is simple to embed a public folder onto your personal blog or website with the available code!

Live SkyDrive offers a variety of options for users. Thumbnail images are available for the image files, Live SkyDrive offers a simple drag-and-drop method, and also has an online meter which displays remaining online storage space that is available.

Windows Live SkyDrive is presently available for Windows or Macintosh computers with Firefox 1.5 or higher, or Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Live SkyDrive is currently available only in the United States, India and the United Kingdom. All file transfers are protected using Secure Socket Layers (SSL).
