Carolyn Chambers Clark's BlogPosted by Carolyn Chambers Clark When I was in graduate school taking a family therapy class I first learned about the concept of a family meeting. My teacher, a PhD nurse psychotherapist, had five or six kids and a husband, and she told us about family meetings and introduced us to the dyanamics of families. Even these days, with many families split up and wives and husbands remarried or serving as single parents, the idea still has merit. Over the years, I've used the idea of family meetings with many of the families I've worked with. Today I read an article talking about family meetings and I wanted to share the idea with you, along with some ideas for helping your family to bond, support, and cherish each other. To read the article on how you can help your family get closer, click on Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark I wrote an article on ADD and spouses because as a therapist for several decades, I found that couples who came to me for counseling often didn't recognize the ADD-like behaviors in their spouses that drove them for help. If you think your spouse may be ADD and are looking for ideas, click on Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark As a nurse pracittioner who's board certified in holistic nursing, I'm interested in making sure we depend less on drugs (which only treat symptoms) and more on nutrition (which can treat underlying deficiences without the negative "side" effects drugs bring). If you agree with me, take a look at a new article on the addadhd suite. It may be of interest. Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark Even if your child has ADHD like behaviors, you can help him or her increase intelligence and the chance of doing much better in school. This probably surprises you. I know it did me. But... Two new studies found that children who believed they could increase their intelligence were able to. How can that be? To find out, read the report. Just click on Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark If you're tired of taking stimulants to control your ADHD-like symptoms and are looking for something with fewer side effects, Pycnogenol could be the answer. Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark Susun says to turn off the nightlights. If you want to know why, you'll have to read the article. To do that now, click on ADHD and Light Let me just tell you an aside. About two years ago, I was having trouble sleeping and I couldn't figure out why. I eventually figured out the digital clock on my VCR kept me awake. When I covered it up, I could sleep. My interview with Susun explains... That's... ADHD and Light Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark As an educator and psychotherapist, I love games and simulations and use them all the time with students and families, but video games are such a solitary, eye and mind-blowing activity, that I'm just not a fan. That's why when I came across a research study that verifies my fears about the dangers of violent video games, I just had to write about it. Find the article at Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark The tests used to differentiate ADHD from non-ADHD, just aren't that reliable and even though millions of children are on stimulant drugs, we don't know the long term effects of that. Does this make sense, especially since many other conditions can masquerade as ADHD? To find out what these conditions are and what you can do to make sure they aren't at fault, click on Other conditions that masquerade and see what you think. Let me know your ideas by starting a discussion at the bottom of that page. Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark Sometimes it's not easy to focus. I have trouble sometimes myself and have to trick myself or promise myself a terrific reward if I'll just buckle down and get to work. The problem gets even more demanding if you also have a child who doesn't focus well. That's why I wrote this week's article on reducing inattention. You can find it by clicking on Reduce ADHD ADD Inattention Let me know what you think. I'm always delighted to get feedback! Posted by Carolyn Chambers Clark I'm always looking for non-drug ways to help reduce or eliminate ADHD-like behaviors. This time I think I found something everybody can do to stop hyperactivity, improve attention and conduct, and even help have healthier hair and nails. It's called eating essential fatty acids. That's just a fancy name for things like leafy green vegetables, cold water fish, and walnuts, navy and soy and kidney beans. I just posted an article with Laura Stevens, a nutrition researcher from artPurdue University who's conducted numerous research studies on EFA's and you can find it by clicking on ADHD and Essentisl Fatty Acids |
