Essentially, Whole Foods needs to breathe some life into its stock price, which has fallen recently with added competition. Wild Oats has 110 stores in 24 states and Canada and grossed 1.2 billion in 2006. Whole Foods has 193 stores and grossed $5.6 billion in 2006.
But what does the aquisition mean for consumers? Higher prices at Wild Oats stores, for one thing. Everybody loves the gorgeous produce at Whole Foods, but if you have to spend a whole paycheck to buy it, it can't be a twice-a-week shopping store.
