Hosting a Memorial Day Picnic?

I always say going to the prom is all about the dress (well, for girls anyway), and having a BBQ is all about the side dishes. After all, that's what everyone brings to a BBQ, right? And side dishes offer you a great chance to get creative.

Here are some of my favorite, picnic-friendly sides and desserts to serve or take along to your Memorial Day celebration this weekend:

• Broccoli Salad -- A family favorite they'll rave about every time.
• Jicama Salad -- Refreshingly crunchy, a perfect side dish for spicy BBQ food.
• Carrot Raisin Salad -- My version of a classic.
• Pea Salad -- Salty, crunchy and creamy all at the same time, this pea salad is a great make-ahead dish.
• Greek Salad -- Super easy!
• Panzanella Salad -- Not a traditional panzanella, this version is meaty and filling.
• Quinoa Salad -- A cold quinoa salad recipe featuring the flavors of a Waldorf salad.
• Fuji Apple Walnut Chicken Salad -- More of a main dish than a side, this salad is so delicious and memorable, I just had to include it.
• Cool Whip Jello Salad -- Is it a side dish or a dessert? You decide!
• Strawberry Fruit Pizza -- The perfect picnic ender!
• Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies -- My low-fat version of a decadent favorite
• Lindt Chocolate Chip Cookies -- Chocolate chippers with a gourmet flavor
• Chocolate Brownies with Peppermint -- Could there be a better marriage than chocolate and peppermint?
