Next to the fireworks, the best part about 4th of July is the backyard barbecues and picnics.
There are so many wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables in season this time of year, you can go wild with sides and salads. I'll be making my ranch bacon pasta salad and my broccoli salad with bacon, slivered almonds, grapes and raisins, along with deviled eggs and oven-fried chicken. Friends are bringing dessert -- homemade blueberry pie -- but I'll also make a frozen strawberry margarita pie. That's always a sure crowd-pleaser.
