While beginning my baking today for Thanksgiving, I found the jewel of a recipe! Because many of mother's recipes are worn from over use, I cleverly hid my favorites by posting them in our churches cookbook! When I went to the book for my grandmother's cheesecake recipe, I found the perfect recipe for cake!
It has been said before - and not so originally - by me - but some of the greatest holiday memories we are going to create with our children are going to be in the kitchen. Someplace between the mess and the wonderful scents of warm spice and roasting turkey, childhood memories are cemented with laughter and togetherness.
At the very beginning of the church cookbook, a congregation member, Mary Ann Guaerte, contributed this recipe for cake - just perfect for those of us with children at this time of year! It beautifully illustrates the patience needed to let your children help in the kitchen!:
To Make A Cake
Light Oven; get out utensils and ingredients. Remove blocks and toys from table. Grease pan; crack nuts. Measure 2 cups flour. Remove Johnny's hands from flour. Wash flour off him. Remeasure flour. Put flour, baking powder and salt in sifter. Get dust pan and brush up pieces of bowl Johnny knocked on the floor. Get another bowl. Answer doorbell. Return to kitchen. Remove Johnny's hands from bowl. Take up greased pan and find layers of nut shells in it. Head for Johnny, who flees, knocking bowl off table. Wash kitchen floor, table, walls and dishes. Call baker. Order cake. Lie down with Johnny and rest.
To All of our American readers:
May your family enjoy the precious time together weaving memories and have safe trips to and fro!
