PAPERBACK American Fiction Books Worth Reading This Summer
Summer is here, and many of our favorite American Fiction authors are releasing paperback copies of their work just in time to take those novels to the beach and catch up on your reading while you work on your tan (or, for the more health conscious, while you sit under an umbrella, wrapped in a long sleeve terry cloth beach cover-up, slathered in SPF 45 lotion).
What should be on your list this summer? Let's take a look at what will be hitting the shelves.
1) Gods In Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson: a true Southern Gothic of a novel, this is a fantastic choice for summer reading. Will God answer Arlene's prayers that no one finds the body in the kudzu? You'll have to read it yourself to find out.
2) Towelhead by Alicia Elian: this coming of age novel is a must-read, an impressive novel-length debut by reknowned short story author Elian. The subject matter is at times intense and occasionally awkward, just as it should be for a novel told from the perspective of a 13 year old girl.
3) The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom. I found this book to be trite, glib and a waste of time, but for the millions who loved it and the legions more who have been waiting for this in paperback - here it is.
4) The Bright Forever by Lee Martin. This tale of abduction, mystery and twisted souls set in Indiana is an infinitely good read this summer.
5) A Changed Man by Francine Prose. Prose, author of Blue Angel is back and running with A Changed Man. If you like the sometimes perverse way Prose looks at the world, you will love this tale of "reformed" Neo-Nazi Vincent Nolan and do-gooder Holocaust survivor Meyer Maslow.
6) Velocity by Dean Koontz. See review.
Enjoy these recommendations, and have a fantastic summer!
