You wouldn't normally think of Veteran's Day as a day honored by many American Fiction authors. I know that I, at least, tend to associate it with non-fictions books: war exposés, biographies of war heroes and villians, history books. There are a surprising number of fiction authors who tackle the theme of being a veteran is some fashion. While I'm certain I will only touch the surface, here are a few I think you might enjoy reading in honor of our Veterans who have fought for the priveledge:
• Alice McDermott's After This: A Novel, the story of a father and veteran who honors a dead soldier by giving his son his name, only to grive when his son dies in the field as well during Vietnam.
• David James Duncan's The Brothers K, the story of a family torn apart by Vietnam as one brother resists the war and one brother joins it.
• Toni Morrison's Paradise, her first novel since winning the
Nobel Prize.
Happy Reading!
