On a recent trip to Guatemala I had to wait until I got home to New England to get good chocolate.
So, you can imagine what I was like in Guatemala when I found out that I could not purchase a single piece of chocolate, no candy bars, no chocolate cakes or cookies pudding, or ice cream, nada.
I hadn't stocked up before leaving home because I was visiting the land where chocolate was invented, you know, the ancient Maya and the cacoa bean. I found out the hard way that Guatemalans don't take their chocolate like the rest of the world does. They drink it by the cup full, hot and so thick you can stand a spoon in it. And, they only drink it in winter, going the rest of the year without chocolate. For that reason alone I would not want to live in Guatemala.
