Have you ever had one of those days when you just didn’t feel like hitting the gym? Or maybe you workout at home, but couldn’t get out of your easy chair. Well I experienced that dilemma today and mentally volleyed, “should I go are should I stay”. I rationalized that, “hey I can do it tomorrow”, “I’m tired”, “I work out all the time”, “I’m just not feeling this today”, but in the end, I found myself at the gym.
On my way home I asked myself, “Chris what made you go to the gym today”? I concluded that after many years of working out (lucky me, right!) it has been ingrained in my psyche. I point this out because I believe we can all reach the point where we work out mechanically. Now don’t misunderstand me here, I’m not insinuating that your workouts be unvaried and boring. Mechanical here represents the consistency factor.
The intent is to develop a habit of engaging in some form of physical activity consistently. Eventually you will get to the point where, regardless of how you are feeling, you will still work out. It will help if you select activities that you enjoy doing and keep in mind, any activity you engage in consistently will enhance you overall fitness level. When you can work, out even on the days you don’t want to, you have actualized a positive lifestyle change. Mechanical consistency is a wonderful thing!
