Exercise Memorandum

Little or no physical activity is a risk factor for heart disease.

Physical activity is more than push-ups and squats — it can include any activity from walking in the park to square dancing. The more fit you are the longer you can exercise, and with less effort than a person who is out of shape. Physical activity also may be an effective outlet for tension and stress.

The AMA says, “Regular physical activity helps you feel better, look good, and can improve your overall sense of well being. It can increase your physical strength and stamina. Proper exercise also can improve your circulation and the performance of your heart and lungs.”

Since the heart is a muscle, it gets stronger with regular exercise. Many forms of exercise increase cardiovascular fitness and improve blood circulation throughout the body. The more fit your cardiovascular system is the longer you can exercise intensely without becoming tired. Cardiovascular fitness also helps you to deal with the emotional and physical demands you face each day with less difficulty. Cardiovascular fitness can make you feel better and improve the quality of your life.

Just as important is the weight loss benefits you’ll receive if you exercise regularly. By exercising you increase the number of calories you burn each day. If you don’t increase calorie intake but exercise regularly you can expect to see your weight drop. It’s really the only way to loss weight while at the same time strengthen your muscular and cardiovascular systems. Doesn’t it make sense to begin a basic routine (30 minutes per day 4 to 5 days per week). You’ll be glad you did!
