Admiral of the Black – this is what the leader of the Brethren of the Coast (an organization of Caribbean buccaneers) was titled.
Buccaneer – a sea rover of the 17 th century. Buccaneers sailed the Caribbean and attacked Spanish ships.
Corsair - a pirate of the Mediterranean Sea.
Gold Road – this was a road that went across Panama. Built by the Spaniards, it was used to transport gold.
Jolly Roger – the pirates’ flag, popularly portraying the skull and crossbones.
“No purchase, no pay” – this meant that the pirate crew were not paid but, instead, shared in a portion of whatever was looted.
“To go on the account” – to go pirating.
