Have a Zoo Adventure

Children love a trip to the zoo and there is so much to learn there. I know that even an impromptu trip can be of educational value. Still, planning ahead to get the most out of your trip will pay off for teachers and students, parents and children of all ages. This Zoo Treasure Hunt article is a colllection of ideas to be used in home or public school situation.

Try a zoo map making project, a zoo poster made by the children of what they hope to see. Have students write reports or make copybooks of their favorite animal facts. Prepare their minds to get every bit of value from the trip. Make certain they learn something new even if they have been to the zoo plenty of times. If this is their first trip, or a trip to a different zoo, planning and studying ahead of time can build up to a great experience.

I recall at the age of nine going with my class to a museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was unprepared for all I saw that day and could barely take it all in. I have remembered that trip though. It made a lasting impression on my mind and on my education.

Use a field trip to the best possible advantage for your students. Enthusiasm goes a long way!
