What books have you read lately that you can recommend for summer list of books for teachers? Now that I am in the midst of planning my sabbatical, I am not as driven to prepare my summer reading list. However, if I could, I would reread these again, simply for the easy reading styles and absorbing story lines. If your fancy is to catch up on some supplementary reading on various topics for teachers, here are a few choice picks.
1. Teacher Man Frank McCourt vividly tells of his early struggles as a new immigrant in the New York City inner schools.
2. Chicken Soup for the Teacher's Soul - inspiring stories for the educator at heart.
3. How Children Fail by John Holt. A real classic in child and teacher development. Very self-revealing.
Every summer I am determined to read at least three new authors I have never heard. Last year was my first summer actually, when I didn't read any books for teachers. Perhaps it was due to the fact that my head was mentally elsewhere due to the second Israeli-Lebanon war and I ended up writing in my journal almost daily whilst staying in numerous places.
When reading, I try to make notes in the margins (in pencil of course!) of the emotional and intellectual parts I identified with. Now, as I get ready to ship boxfulls of books back to the States, i just happened to reread sections of pencilled notes of these above mentioned favorites. I was amazed at how motivated I was in identifying with the authors. Now, indoctrinated in a system, I have time still to recompile another list. Perhaps though in a few month's time.
