Remembrance Day, the 90th Anniversary of Armistice Day

.

The older I get, the more difficult I find it to read and watch about the wars Canadians have participated in. The bravery of the men and women in the midst of indescribable horror and fear shines like a star in the darkness. Most of them managed to survive and come home again, while still a sizeable number gave their lives, never to touch Canadian soil again. It must have been dreadful.

But wars and battles continue, and soldiers continue to march off to battle. Looking back into the pages of history to find hope of peace for the future, there is no sign that war will ever stop. Somewhere in this world, there is always tension and fear, erupting into death and misery.

We are proud of the Canadians serving all over the globe, trying to bring peace and a better life to others. The world would be a much more dire place without them. On this Remembrance Day, let's take a look at a few general statistics, found with many others the Veterans Affairs site.

  • 1899-1901
  • South African War
  • About 7,000 Canadians served, 267 died.
  • 1914-1918
  • World War One, The Great War
  • Approximately 650,000 participated, over 68,000 sacrificed
  • 1939-1945
  • World War Two
  • About 1,000,000 served, 48,000 died
  • 1950-1953
  • Korean War
  • 26,791 served in Canadian Army Special Force, 516 died
  • 1947 to early 2006
  • Peacekeeping Missions
  • 150,000 soldiers involved, at least 160 gave their lives

Let us honour all who served on this Remembrance Day, the 90th Anniversary of the end of WW1. We will not forget.
