The Stay-at-Home Mom as Hostess

Have you ever wondered why it's the stay-at-home parent who volunteers to host almost every gathering, has the neighborhood Christmas party and is chairman of the block party?

I think it's because of the morning coffee.

My mornings are the best part of my day as a stay-at-home mom. While the rest of the world is rushing around, banging on bathroom doors, putting on eye shadow while signing homework, and throwing a PB&J across the room to a kid on his way to the bus, I'm sitting at my desk drinking coffee.

During the first cup, I'm still waking up. But it's that second cup of coffee that starts things turning in my brain. I start looking at the weeks ahead and I get a jolt of ambition. Why don't we have the neighbors over for dinner on Friday night? There's a track meet on Saturday, why don't we invite some of the kids over here afterwards? It's almost Thanksgiving . . . I wonder what the new family on our street is doing? This Christmas, I should organize a cookie exchange.

Being the hostess with the mostess is one of the perks of being a stay-at-home mom. You get to prepare your house and food early in the day, so entertaining is so much easier.

Stay-at-Home Parents has some great suggestions for organizing fun times. Have a Christmas cookie exchange with 11 of your closest friends this holiday season. Take the plunge and invite your whole family for Thanksgiving dinner this year. Organize a neighborhood block party. We even have tips on how to have kid-friendly dinner parties and how to organize a play group and book club.

The working moms are counting on you! So come on, have that second cup of coffee and start planning!
