I recieve questions from readers who seek further advice on composing academic papers more and more often. Here's the latest question and my answer.

Question:

Hi Daria Just wanted you to clarify whether academic essays or writing consist of mainly expository paragraphs or is it dependable on the type of questions given?

Answer:

Clearly, expository paragraphs are most commonly used in essays whose main purpose is validating the thesis, rather than explaining what sth means (definition paragraphs), how sth functions (explanatory paragraphs), etc. It really depends on the context of your writing. Let's say you write an essay or an article about "The Impact of Armed Conflicts on the US Internal Affairs". In this case, you will use expository paragraphs to explain the relation between war and internal politics in general; then exemplification paragraph to define the relation in more generic terms; compare and contrast paragraph to clarify and reinforce your own thesis, and so on. Expository paragraphs will contain mostly quoted sources, objective facts (how wars abroad are used for political intrigues inside the country), and not your interpretation or views (that a particular war was started because the President wanted to increase his social rankings, for example). Exposition provides your reader with theoretical background of the problem that will be discussed in the paper.

Appropriate Food For Persian Cats

Persian cats, despite being our domestic pets, retain predator’s instincts. They will, consequently, want fresh, aromatic, and predominantly raw meals. Their fur, in order to keep shining, needs lots of vitamins and regular nutrition.

  • Boiled and raw meat pieces, chicken pieces, sea fish, shrimps and other sea fruits – should all be served in limited amounts as otherwise they may cause cat’s diarrhea. If served raw, all the previously mentioned food products should be carefully washed under running water;
  • Boiled vegetables – carrot, celery, and cabbage pieces that can be served together with the meat cut into tiny cubes;
  • Dairy products – white cheeses, milk, eggs – all should be boiled, fresh, and low-fat;
  • Fresh water;
  • Can food appropriate for cat’s age.

Avoid spices, raw fish, sausages, and generally high-calories food.

Inappropriate Food For Persian Cats

  • Serving cold and not fresh foods – cat shouldn’t eat wastes. If something is not fresh enough for humans, it’s the same for cats;
  • Feeding cats to dog’s food – artificially produced foods contain proper amounts of vitamins appropriate only for particular animals;
  • Bones and fish bones.

Consequences of Bad Cat Nutrition

Diarrhea, urinary tract infection, thyroid problems, obesity, and depression.

I adopted my first Persian cat about a year ago. To cut long story short, he was already 8 years old and, sadly, I found him in a very bad emotional and physical condition. I've never had to deal with cats, sickly ones in particular, and only knew about caring for dogs and turtles. I had to sacrifice many hours of my time for research concerning proper care of Persian cats, and it was literally months before I could see any progress.

My cat, Marquise, refused to use the litter box; he was biting our legs, hands, and scratching us all over for no reason whatsoever; he had panic attacks whenever guests were visiting us and he was constantly overeating. He wouldn't allow anyone touch him; let alone brush his fur (all in awfully knotted hair-balls). I wasn't able to pat him on his head, take him on my hands, or take him anywhere outside the house. He wouldn’t run; he wouldn’t play with anyone or anything.

Right now, Marquise is 100% healthy and happy cat! Even a spoiled one, I admit!

How I, finally, managed to ease all his fears and solve health issues is a long, long story. I’d like to tell it in detail and in relative order – hence the blog post. Here are some of my cat care articles; many more are yet to come.

Plagiarism is not simply about stealing. If that was the case, none of us would have to double-check all references or look up particular copyright agreement again and again. Modern academia has a myriad of researching techniques as well as a variety of sources at its disposal. This said, academic writing faces many new challenges as well. Writing original papers is not merely about academic honesty and good intentions but, first and foremost, about professionalism and knowledge.

Avoiding plagiarism is, also, about the proper use of words – in terms of form and number. Before quoting anything in an essay or article, first you must find out what citation word-count is allowed. You also have to quote in accordance with the original (spelling included), and if you paraphrase you must abide by certain standards.

Further reading: Is Paraphrasing Plagiarism?

There’s one old rule about academic writing - give credit whenever you’re not sure if particular piece of information should be referenced. You don’t have credit so-called “common knowledge”, however. The basic rule about composing original academic essays is good organization of work which will enhance originality.

Further reading: How to Avoid Plagiarism

With essay trade being currently on the rise, many students may wish to purchase original and high-quality papers just to turn them in as their own. This tendency is very harmful. It hurts the credibility of any academic institution, undermines the value of higher education as such, and diminishes the prospects of self-development and intellectual growth.
