This week Virgin America launched its new service with flights between New York and San Francisco, and Los Angeles and San Francisco, with cheap travel deals promised on its website.
Sample budget air tickets on offer at launch include $49 one way from LA to San Francisco ($149 First Class), and $149 one-way from San Francisco to New York JFK ($449 First Class). You can book now for a $44 cheap fare to Las Vegas from San Francisco, with the service launching October 10th.
The New York to Los Angeles service launches August 29th with fares currently available for $149 ($449 First Class). September 26th sees the arrival of the San Francisco to Washington DC route, with fares from $139 each way, and then the Los Angeles-Washington DC service launches October 24th.
The long-awaited launch of Virgin America is great news indeed. With its low fares and innovative features, Virgin is a welcome addition to the US domestic flight scene.
Virgin has long been one of my favorite airlines for transatlantic travel. It first launched when I was a student backpacking around Europe, and I remember calling up to ask about booking a flight home from London to New York on this exciting new airline that showed free movies on board. I was told to go down to Tottenham Court Road and buy my ticket at the Virgin Records shop. How cool was that!
In-flight movies are standard these days, and the cheeky upstart of the 1980s is now a major airline serving cities all around the world. But it never stops looking for ways to give its customers the services they want.
Virgin America is as innovative as ever. It's the first airline in the US to install mood lighting. Other on-board features include MP3 players, power points at every seat where you can plug in your laptop or electronic games, and pay-per-view films on demand. And with the option to order fresh food when you want it from the screen at your seat, no more worries about going hungry if you want to snooze uninterrupted.
Another reason I like Virgin is that, unlike the US carriers, it still serves complimentary drinks and wine on its transatlantic flights. It's just another little sign of good service. I'm glad I can now fly Virgin across America, too.
