My Favorite Santa Fe Restaurants

Writing about New Mexico always gets me thinking about New Mexican cuisine. And that brings back memories of Santa Fe restaurants, and the fantastic meals I've had there.

One of my recent jobs has been to write new material for Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Travel Guide to Southwest USA and Las Vegas. As one of the original authors, it's nice to know the book is updated regularly, with the new edition due out later this year.

This, of course, reminded me of those great Santa Fe restaurants. I've shared my four favorites with you – The Pink Adobe, The Shed, Maria's New Mexican Kitchen, and Tomasita's – in a separate article.

I've personally dined in all these restaurants, often more than once. I tried blue corn tortillas and black beans for the first time at the Pink Adobe on my first visit to Santa Fe many years ago.

This menu at this Santa Fe landmark is a little more upscale these days, tending towards steaks and seafood (cooked Southwestern style, of course). My husband and I had a romantic meal there on a honeymoon trip a couple of years ago. Has it been that long? I think we're due for another Steak Dunigan.

The Shed is another restaurant I go back to again and again, as much for its bright and lively atmosphere as for its delicious food. I think it would take a lifetime to get through all 100-plus Margaritas on Maria's menu, but I'd love to try.... especially if I could have one of their homemade chile rellenos with every one.

So if you're headed for Santa Fe on your summer vacation, don't miss these wonderful restaurants. They're inexpensive to moderately priced, with all the great flavors and atmosphere of the Southwest.
