State and County Fairs

I've been going to the county fair for as long back as I can remember. All the school kids got free tickets with each school schedeuled for a different night. We were and are Tuesday which just happens to be the night it rains without fail every year. But, hey, that's OK. It's always fun anyway.

One of my favorite things about the fair is the food - naturally.

In recent years, I always make sure to eat at the Optimist booth. My boss (who is now retired) mans the grill. The boys and I stop by to say "hi" and get our dinner.

It's easy to go broke at the fair. We always keep track and make sure we have enough money left to get Elephant Ears right before we leave. We arrive home covered in powdered sugar.

Hey, this is what memories are made of.

When I was younger, I always entered food at the fair. I made cookies, cakes and candy. The best cake I made was Jaws - the movie - remember. The cake was a shark. I stuck a Barbie Doll in the mouth of the cake shark. I got second place!

One year, my mom made a German Chocolate Cake. That's her specialty. She got Best of Show. She didn't think she'd won anything, because she couldn't find her cake. The judges ate the whole thing. Her ribbon was sitting on an empty plate. Yep. The cake is really that good.

If you haven't been to a fair lately, be sure to look up one. It's hard to beat an evening at the fair.
