college student slams Thanksgiving

I just read an editorial about Thanksgiving by a college student and how he thinks the whole nation is "full of it." He points out that the background of the celebration is pagan and notes that we ought to invite the whole neighborhood for dinner and shoot them afterwards as tradition dictates.

No. I'm not linking the piece. I'm not giving him more hits for a piece clearly meant to inflame. This kid has a right to his opinion. I have a right to not link his opinion.

If college boy wants to skip Thanksgiving, then more power to him. I challenge him to get Thanksgiving banned at his college. All his "friends" can attend classes right through the holiday. They can "give thanks" every day as he suggests right through the break.

If giving "thanks" is a sin, then sign me up. I don't tell anyone who to thank. You can thank God. You can thank Allah. You can thank the sun. You can thank your mom for cooking the meal (if she does). You can thank your lucky stars that you get a couple of days off school or work. If you don't have anything to be thankful for, then go help at the soup kitchen and see if you can find a few reasons to be glad that you're in college and clearly have plenty to eat (as reflected in the photo with the article). That's what I think about that.

Myself? I'll be thankful for my two sons and the rest of my family. I'll be sad that my dad died in a truck crash this summer and won't be here this year. I'll be glad though that I found a set of photos from last Thanksgiving saved online and with all of us together last Thanksgiving. I'll also be glad that college boy is not going to be here and telling us how stupid we are for gathering. We could have skipped Thanksgiving last year. But, I'd sure hate that knowing it was the last time my Dad cut the turkey and made the bread. Yeah. I'm thankful for last Thanksgiving and the ones before. I'm thankful the family got together, because it's easy to forget to do that day-to-day. If we all got fooled into celebrating a lame holiday, then so be it. At least, we all sat down together last year. That's more than I can say for this year, but I'll still be thankful this year. I'll be thankful for the ones here and also thankful for the turkey days with Dad all those other years.

College boy can skip Thanksgiving. More power to him. I won't be joining him in passing on a chance to celebrate "whatever."
