Adventures with a Spoon

My youngest son is 16 months old and he loves to do whatever his big brother is doing. He is very interested in using forks and spoons at every meal even if he has to place the food on the spoon with his fingers. It has even gotten to the point where he wants to use a fork to eat a bagel. He uses the plastic infant forks so getting the fork to actually stick into a bagel is quick a project by itself but he is determined that it is the only right way to eat.

I was trying to stall introducing him to the spoon because he was finally mastering the art of eating and getting most of the food to end up in his mouth. I didn't want to mess with a good thing. Unfortunately my son had a different idea. He wants to grow up just as fast as he can despite whatever we do to try and keep him little for as long as we can.

Learning to use a spoon is not only an important self feeding skill but it helps your infant develop their small motor skills. As your infant practices using a spoon their coordination and balance will improve and they will gradually start to get more of the food in their mouth.

As with everything else in your infant's life, using a spoon is a learning process for both parent and child. Read more at - Introduction to the Spoon
