A moss garden can be mysterious and eerie or serene and peaceful, but either way it is likely to have shade, moss, ferns, stones, and the occasional wild flower growing in it. If you have fantasized about starting a moss garden of your own, you may have wondered how exactly moss gets started. And if you have tried to transplant moss and failed, you might have wondered what you should have done differently. So why DOES moss grow, anyway?
I recently came across this terrific piece on moss gardening. Don't let the title mislead you! Ostensibly it is intended to help homeowners fight moss in the lawn, but about midway through the tables are turned and instructions are offered for encouraging moss and creating a -- you guessed it -- moss garden of your own.
