Grow a Child's Flower Garden

Are you familiar with the popular PBS children's television show Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton? I hope so! Anyway, I just discovered that the show web site features an award winning illustrated story, hand drawn in crayon, called How Flowers Grow. It's just a few pages long and it is adorable. Best of all, the little flower has roots!

I was especially thrilled to see the roots because that means the illustrator "got" the real idea behind flowers -- flowers are plants, plants have roots. I hope they learned that by playing around with real live plants and flowers and not from some text book at school.

Let's make sure a few more kids learn about plants and flowers this year. When you think about it. every kid who gardens -- and enjoys it -- is a future kindred gardener.
