Cat in the Hat Birthday Books

"The Cat in the Hat "-- all 236 words of it -- was written in 1957 and that makes this year the 50th anniversary of "The Cat in the Hat." To celebrate, I encourage you to send a special birthday wish to the Cat. For each special birthday e-card sent to the Cat (or paper card if you prefer) before May first, Random House Children's Books will donate a children's book to First Book in support of the national literacy initiative called Project 236. It's easy and it's fun and it's free.

You might want to turn down your sound before you click on over to the Cat in the Hat special birthday card site. You can only send one card, but each card sent results in another book donated, so encourage all your friends to participate.

There are many ways to help celebrate literacy. Get more ideas at the site including information about the National Read-Aloud on March 2, 2007, read-ins, printable activities to share and more at the Happy Birthday Cat in the Hat Web Site.

You (and your kids) will get a kick out of designing the colorful card and listening to the silly music on the site. It made me laugh out loud. What better activity for a snowed in wintery day?!

So what does this have to do with gardening? I dunno, but you wouldn't be reading this if you couldn't read -- and that's enough for me. Go have some fun and celebrate!
