Bulb Planting Time

Spring flowering bulbs including tulips and daffodils are planted in the fall. The bare bulbs are available in stores now, but it may not be time to plant yet in your area.

Wait for Cool Nights

Wait to plant until night temperatures run regularly in the 40's. This allows time for the soil to cool after summer's heat.

Allow Time for Rooting

Bulbs can be planted up until about six weeks before the soil freezes, so you have quite a long time frame for planting. But, try to plant as soon as the soil cools.

Purchase Bulbs Early

You may want to purchase the bulbs as soon as they become available. That way you can take advantage of the best selection. You can also assure they are stored properly until planting time.

Store Them Right, Plant them Soon!

Bulbs are alive -- so they deserve special care. Do not leave them in your car where they will overheat, do not allow them to freeze, do not allow them to get wet before planting. Do not keep them in a closed plastic bag, this can result in condensation, encourages premature sprouting and also often leads to the bulbs rotting.

Store the bulbs in a paper bag or cardboard box in a cool, dry, dark place until you are ready to plant them. Plant them as soon as the soil conditions are right. Do not hold them any longer than necessary. The sooner they are planted, the better!

Remember to Plant Your Bulbs!

Bulbs left stored and forgotten until next spring are not going to grow for you. Remember to plant your bulbs this fall!
