Finally, the Regions Choice program recognizes regional rose performance -- from the All-America Rose Selections! Everyone who grows roses know that very few are well adapted to growing all over the country. It makes sense to divvy the place up into regions and celebrate the specific roses that do well in each different area. If a rose is able to do well nationwide, this type of award program will demonstrate that; and when a rose truly excells in only certain areas this type of award program is able to show that, too.
The AARS program will be introducing some of the new regions for 2008 (only three and all in the western part of the country) and then add more later. You can check out the 2008 winners for the first regions NOW at their web site. You will recognize quite a few of these roses, I'm sure.
I really applaud efforts to make gardening information more locally specific, especially with this type of big award program. The regional aspect makes the awards far more meaningful in practical terms for gardeners and allows super roses to truly shine for all. Take a look at how the regions are configured and see what you think.
Here is the page with the new regional award winners for 2008 and photos for the regions developed so far. Enjoy!
