I managed to get my 1200 words done today, despite six hours in the Eye Hospital followed by a two hour seminar on scriptwriting separated by an hour on the bus.
But just as I was thinking how well things are going, Kate turned round this evening and said happily, "I've got Thursday off, and the next two as well. So I won't have to work any more Thursdays in November!"
"Oh, that's good," I said, lying through my teeth. What I thought was, Oh Fuck.
Don't get me wrong. I love my wife's company normally. But at the weekend, when she's at home, my word count drops to half of what it is normally on a Thursday. Kate likes to have the radio or the TV --or sometimes both-- on. I like peace and quiet when I'm working.
Suddenly I'm facing a potential shortfall of 3600 words.
Just how brutally honest should I be? Or is there a tactful way of handling the situation?
